Interesting Things You Need To Know About Shower Onions

Social media holds immense power in making anything go viral in just a matter of hours or days. One such viral video that has been making the rounds is a video on “shower onions” on TikTok, a video-sharing app to share interesting and unique content.
If you have not seen the video yet and are wondering what the fuss is all about, here is a quick overview of what shower onions are and whether it’s something worth looking into!
What Are Shower Onions? (Tiktok)
A recent viral TikTok trend, “shower onions” refers to placing onions in an area of the house to prevent any foul odors — in this case inside the bathroom and on top of the toilet tank.
While one may think this is a prank, placing onions in the bathroom is a pretty logical, practical, and effective home solution.
Trending Video By @Karalynndunton
The “shower onions” trend went viral when TikTok user @Karalynndunton uploaded a video on the social media platform. Miss Dunton was visiting the home of a guy that she has been talking with during the pandemic. She went to his bathroom and started inspecting the space and found something special.
In the video, Miss Dunton can be heard saying “OMG you guys I think I’m in love” while zooming in on the guy’s clean bathroom showcasing decorative seashells and various soap bottles along with the usual bathroom essentials like toilet paper and dental floss.
She then panned to a bowl of onions resting on the toilet tank and commented nonchalantly “He even has shallots” before taking a bite out of it.
While Miss Dunton was unfazed by this guy’s choice of bathroom essentials, other TikTok users had a lot of questions related to showers, onions, and bathrooms. This led to more people viewing her now-trending video which amassed millions of views and thousands of shares since February 2022.
Funnily enough, as it turns out, the whole thing was an elaborate prank. In a Buzzfeed interview, Miss Dunton admitted that the “shower onions” were staged as part of a joke with her male friend. It was never her intention for it to go viral. Nor was she aware that using onions as an odor neutralizer is normal.
Are Shower Onions Real?
The video about shower onions raised a lot of questions regarding its validity, resulting in plenty of users acknowledging that they often place onions in their toilets or other areas of their homes to prevent bad smells.
So, yes, shower onions are indeed real.
Onions are natural deodorizers and help neutralize unwanted and unpleasant odors, making them an excellent choice if you are looking for something to absorb smells in certain spaces.
This is an especially handy trick if your bathroom has no air vents or windows.
Can We Use Onions In The Shower?
Yes, you can!
Onions are proven to be natural aroma absorbers and can work not just in the shower or bathroom but also in any other area of your home.
You can use any onion you like — red, white, or yellow. They’ll all work the same.
Apart from onions, other natural ingredients like sliced lemons or orange peels also serve the same purpose.
Will My Shower Smell Like Onions?
This is one of the main concerns why people considering using onions are not sold on the idea.
Onions can have a strong aroma, especially when peeled or cut. And in the first few hours, you can expect the onion smell to spread in your shower or bathroom. The onion smell will be especially stronger in small, enclosed areas.
But after a while, the onion will lose its aroma as it begins to absorb the other odors in that area.
Just make sure you switch out the onions every couple of days.
How To Use Shower Onions
While most people opt to put whole onions in a bowl somewhere in their bathroom, others prefer to slice the onions.
Both work, but it is more aesthetically pleasing to use whole onions especially if you combine different onion colors. The aroma of sliced onion is also more powerful. It’s all up to your preferences; different strokes for different folks.
