15 Most Inspiring Black Female Fade Haircut Designs

Previously, short haircuts with fades were only popular amongst men. But today they have become indisputably one of the best female haircuts, especially among black women. If you are planning to get this haircut, here are some of the most inspiring black female fade haircut designs to inspire you.

What’s a Black Female Fade Haircut?

A fade haircut is a unique hairstyle that involves shaving the hair on the sides of your head or trimming it while keeping the hair on top of your headlong. The term fade refers to the even gradient effect created by the trimmed and buzzed side hair.

As mentioned above, the fade haircut was initially considered to be a men’s hairstyle, but lately, many black women have made it their signature hairstyle.

History of the Fade Haircut

History

It emerged in the late 40s and early 50s in the U.S. Military, which is known for its stern grooming standards. Over time, regular American men became fond of the haircut, making it the best haircut to show their coolness.

In the early 80s when the hip hop culture began to take root in America, the fade haircut became the urban contemporary hairstyle for male hip hop artists. Its acceptance in the music and fashion industries catapulted its approval to unmatched prominence, not just in America but around the world.

In the early 90s, many American women (especially black women) had already started trying it out. For instance, Toni Braxton, a renowned African-American female singer, inspired a lot of black women to try the fade haircut with her impeccable face-framing, super-stylish fade cut in the early nineties.

As time went by, barbers in the United States started experimenting with different fade haircut designs, including the famous afros and Jheri curls.

In the late 90s, a reworked, edgy version of the fade haircut was discovered, which also became a standard haircut in the world of hip hop during its heydays. This style was commonly referred to as hi-top fade or flattop fade. But it’s also important to note that Grace Jones had already rocked this hairstyle before the likes of Cameo, Eric B & Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane discovered it.

But the hi-top fade haircut faded out in the early 2000s. But it was brought back by several Africa-American celebrities like Kanye West, Nas, Will I. Am, Kendrick Lamar, and Usher in 2010. Since then, this haircut has been slowly evolving into various fade designs. Black women have also accepted it fully, creating numerous designs of their own.

How to Touch Up Your Fade Haircut at Home

Unlike other hairstyles, a fade haircut is easy to maintain. Regardless of the fade design you choose, your fade haircut will only stay fresh for about four days before the trimmed hair starts to grow. That’s why you should always have a razor handy to touch up your fade haircut.

Make sure you don’t cut into your haircut or the linework. However, you have to clean your hair up even if it’s curly or straight. Ensure that the razor doesn’t go out of the pre-defined lines so that it doesn’t destroy the design. If you are not confident enough to touch up your fade hairstyle at home, you can ask your fiancé, relative, or friend to do it for you.

You should also remember to sterilize your razor before using it to avoid infections. Teach yourself how to hold and use the razor before you attempt to touch up your fade haircut alone at home. You can find many video tutorials and blogs that teach people how to touch up their fades with razors.

You’ll also need hair conditioners to help your hair retain its color for a long time. Ask your hairstylist for advice on the best conditioner for your fade haircut and how to use it. Other hair products that you may need for a fade haircut touch-up include shaving gel, styling gel, leave-in shampoo, hair spray, and more.
